Intoxication while swallowing smoke after burning various intoxicants like bidi, cigarette, cigar, chillum etc. is called smoking. Tobacco is mainly used as a means of smoking. Tobacco is made by drying the leaves of the Nicotiana tree. Tobacco contains nicotine which provides intoxication.

Smoking contains toxic substances such as nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic, benzopyrin, etc., which harm the organs of the body. Due to its excessive consumption, cancer of the lungs, intestines and throat, tuberculosis, heart attack, asthma, sterility, infection of the digestive system, high blood pressure, nervousness, diseases of the mouth and teeth, etc. have many fatal effects.

Due to smoking, a person can have to face many side effects such as -

  • It causes so much damage to the body's respiratory process, lungs, etc. Often, many people even lose their lives due to smoking,
  • Smoking also reduces the memory power and will power of the person, tremors start in the hands and feet after consuming it for a long time.
  • The smoke released in smoking also harms that person's children, wife and other family members.
  • Smoking increases the risk of heart disease. Smoking can also accelerate the normal aging process of the skin.
  • Smokers live on average 10 years less than non-smokers. Tobacco smoking is the biggest avoidable cause of death.

Smoking is a problem that needs to be banned, otherwise it will destroy our future generations. There is a need to create awareness among people to stop smoking. In every way, personal and social, the person has to prepare himself against the consumption of tobacco. Government and social institutions are also working in this direction. To reduce the increasing addiction of tobacco consumption, World Health Organization celebrates No Tobacco Day on 31st May every year.

The Tobacco Prohibition Act was first enacted by the Government of India in 1975. Smoking and spitting in public places have been prohibited under the Pollution Prevention and Control Act of 1981. Currently, the COTPA (Prohibition of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act) enacted in 2003 to stop smoking is in effect. It was implemented all over India from 18 May 2003.
